A veterans memorial at the corner of Main Street and Nunn Lane in Picture Rocks Borough, Lycoming County, was years in the making. Formally unveiled at a dedication ceremony in May 2013, the borough wanted a way to honor veterans who served in all branches of the military. In 2008, borough council agreed the site at the corner of Main Street and Nunn Lane would be a prime location for the proposed veterans memorial after the old structure on the property was condemned and torn down.
Picture Rocks, a borough of about 725 residents, felt it was important honor veterans from the five branches of the military. Veterans from as far away from California are honored here at Veterans Memorial Park of Picture Rocks.
Borough Council President Gene Otterbein, Sr., a retired U.S. Air Force senior master sergeant, spearheaded the project within the borough.
“This memorial has become the central focus point of the borough,” Otterbein said. “The personal pride I have as a veteran in seeing this project come to fruition and to have so many contacts in the business world who have donated labor, cash, services or other items has been awe inspiring.”
