The DCNR Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Program provides funding to volunteer fire organizations serving rural areas that are unprotected or inadequately protected from wildfire. The program focuses on improving fire protection, saving lives, and protecting property.
Applications open September 28, 2026, and are due January 7, 2027. Grants are available for up to $15,000 and require a 50% cost share, meaning the grant can cover no more than half of the total eligible project costs.
Eligible projects include wildland PPE and protective gear, suppression equipment, communications equipment, dry hydrants, federal excess vehicle conversions, and wildfire mitigation or prevention projects. Funding decisions are based in part on the vulnerability of the area and the adequacy of existing fire protection.
