Honoring 150 Years
The Borough of Shiremanstown Celebrates its Sesquicentennial

Located six miles west of the state capital, lies the borough of Shiremanstown. The Cumberland County
borough was established in 1874, which makes this year special, as it marks their Sesquicentennial celebration.

The area goes many years back in the history of our Commonwealth, around the time William Penn set aside over 7,750 acres for Indian reservations. Between 1739 and 1764, Germans were settling in this area with the graces of the Indians. Around 1755, Peter Dicks set up the first iron ore mine in Spring Grove west of the Susquehanna,
and circa 1770, he built a forge near the spring, becoming Pennsylvania’s historic Spring Forge. It continued
to grow and in 1775 a German immigrant by the name of Daniel Shireman bought out the iron forge.

Much of the iron forged by Shireman’s Spring Forge was sent east toward Philadelphia to make cannons and
ammunition for the American Army to fight the Britishbjust before the occupation of Philadelphia during the
Revolutionary War. With money he earned during that time, Shireman bought much of the land in the Shiremanstown area.

Today, the borough is a thriving town, with proximity to Harrisburg (6 mi.), Baltimore (76 mi.), Washington, DC (120 mi.), it is a great place for people to reside and to be able to attend museums, art galleries, great restaurants, and fun family things to do.

The members of the Shiremanstown Borough Police Department are a group of men and women dedicated to
protecting and serving the residents. Led by Chief James E. Stoner, the force is often visible patrolling and assisting the public in any number of situations.

The borough has been proudly served by a volunteer fire department, since 1914. Members of the fire department
not only provide fire protection to residents, but they also respond to medical emergencies with trained
personnel providing basic patient care.
